Waymo's Self-Driving Vehicles Set to Arrive London Roads Next Year.

The US-based company Waymo has announced that its autonomous vehicles will be available for booking on London's roads beginning next year.

London Becomes Pioneering European City for Autonomous Ride-Hailing.

London will emerge as the pioneering European city to launch an driverless taxi service, similar to those already familiar in multiple US cities and four other American locations utilizing Waymo's innovative systems.

Initial Trials to Commence with Human Specialists.

Waymo stated that its vehicles are currently en route to London and will start navigating on the city's public roads in the near future with safety drivers in control.

The company – originally created as a spin-off from Google's autonomous vehicle project and belonging to the Alphabet family – explained it would scale up activities and partner with the government transport body and the city's mobility organization to acquire the essential permissions to offer fully autonomous services by 2026.

Expanding Presence in Self-Driving Transport In London.

Additional organizations, such as Uber and the British technology firm Wayve, have likewise declared their own plans to pilot self-driving cabs in the city next year.

This is in response to the British government confirming it would accelerate rules permitting real-world tests to proceed before regulation enabling driverless transport is enacted in full.

Comprehensive Rollout Expected After Regulatory Framework Comes into Force.

A fuller rollout of self-driving taxis is expected in the UK after the new law fully takes effect in late 2027.

Waymo's Existing Ties in the UK and Beyond.

Waymo currently has connections to the UK after establishing its inaugural European technical center in Oxford in 2019.

The company is also starting operations in Tokyo using Jaguar Land Rover EVs, marking its second current project beyond the US.

“We've demonstrated how to responsibly scale completely driverless ride-hailing, and we are eager to extend the advantages of our systems to the Britain,” said Waymo's co-chief executive, adding that the innovation was “enhancing transport security and travel more available”.

Proven History in the United States.

Waymo introduced its autonomous vehicles in 2020 and presently states it has carried more than 10 million passengers in the US.

Despite some troubling events, Waymo asserted that data demonstrated that vehicles driven by drivers were associated with incidents that harmed walkers at a much higher rate than its driverless vehicles.
