The Liverpool legend under consideration for Rangers reappointment after Martin gets the sack.

The former Rangers boss is a leading candidate for a surprise reappointment to Ibrox following the announced departure of manager Russell Martin.

Martin's unfortunate time in charge concludes

The coach's troubled Ibrox tenure ended with the boss departing the Falkirk Stadium via a rear entrance and a vehicle on standby after a share of the points which left Rangers eleven points adrift from the top of the Scottish Premiership after just seven fixtures.

Incensed fans had surrounded the club coach in the away ground, showing their discontent.

Ibrox directors reluctant to dismiss Martin

The Rangers board had been hesitant to dismiss the coach, who was only hired in the summer, despite vociferous complaints from supporters.

However, there was an realization that the 39-year-old’s job had become impossible.

Rangers have secured just a single victory of their Premiership matches to date, which has been coupled with poor showings on the continental stage.

Collectively, the coach secured just five victories of 17 fixtures, with a uninspiring, unclear footballing philosophy that gained little support.

“Even though changeovers take a while, outcomes have not met the club’s expectations,” said a Rangers statement on Sunday evening.

“Assistant head coach Gill, and first-team staff member Mike Williamson, will also be leaving. Russell and his backroom team have worked exceptionally hard throughout their time at the club. We are grateful for their efforts and hope for the best for the future.”

The former manager won the title with Rangers

The Liverpool legend won the title with the Ibrox side in the 2020-21 season, their sole title since 2011.

His work in Glasgow before then, combined with difficulties at Aston Villa, raises questions about his managerial capabilities.

Yet he is highly regarded by the very set of fans Rangers are keen to get back on side.

The rehiring of the Anfield legend, who most recently coached in the Middle East, would prove hugely popular.

Gerrard will also be aware of what scarce chances he has to be a head coach in major divisions.

The sacking will intensify scrutiny on Thelwell

The coaching change will intensify scrutiny on Kevin Thelwell, the Rangers sporting director.

He had been hugely supportive of the coach while publicly revealing a investment of a significant sum in the transfer window.

The former boss had agreed to a multi-year agreement.

His past roles

Martin, who had previously been in charge the League One side and Swansea, guided the Saints to promotion to the Premier League in the previous season after being hired the prior offseason.

He was dismissed last winter after the Southampton secured just a single victory of their opening 16 fixtures.

He was named Barry Ferguson’s next in line in June, after the interim head coach had taken over from the fired Clement in winter.
