President Donald Trump has authorized the movement of government troops from California to Oregon in the wake of a judicial decision that prevented his initial plan to deploy the National Guard in Portland.

This move bypasses a court's order that had prohibited the use of troops in Portland by rather using National Guard soldiers who were previously serving in the California city after earlier protests in that area.

California Governor Gavin Newsom vowed to pursue a legal action over the decision, which he labeled a "shocking misuse of the statutes and power".

The Oregon city is the latest American city – many of which are Democrat-led – focused on as part of the president's crime crackdown. He has argued that troops are needed to bring back peace amid persistent unrest over federal immigration actions.
