Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals using such drugs need to be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to original weight within about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the medication explain a sudden return of cravings.
"It was like a trigger activating and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.
The struggle is worsened if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
