RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.
The site, identified by surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of approach shafts down to the facility... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - enforced militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.
"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.
RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.
"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," he said. "They were among thousands of British personnel on duty over the festive period. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."
During December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
The UN reports Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
