The Fianna Fáil nominee Jim Gavin has announced his withdrawal from the race for Ireland's head of state immediately.

He was poised to be a candidate among three standing for the Irish presidency, beside TD Catherine Connolly and Heather Humphreys of Fine Gael.

Nonetheless, on Sunday evening he stated through a declaration that he "erred that was not in keeping with my character and his personal standards."

"Taking all these considerations on board, I have decided to exit the presidential race right away and return to the arms of my family," he declared in a statement.

Additional details to come.
