A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's key government projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The president reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were executed at an accelerated rate, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled persistent apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party called for an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in full accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
